What it means to travel
this route properly

Most Route of Emotions itineraries fit three landscapes into seven or eight days. The transfers are long, the excursions back-to-back, and many travellers arrive home having covered a lot of ground without having genuinely absorbed any of it.

This itinerary starts from a different premise. Fifteen days gives each place the time it actually deserves — three full days in Jericoacoara instead of the usual two; two nights in Barra Grande, a wind and kite destination that most operators skip entirely; two nights in Santo Amaro for the western lagoon circuits most travellers never reach; and two nights in Atins, a village with no road access where the only way in is by speedboat downriver.

The stargazing excursion in the dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses — a private 4x4 to the top of a dune after dark, no artificial light for 40 kilometres in any direction — is consistently what our clients describe as the moment that stays with them longest.

Half-day itinerary departing near Lagoa do Portinho toward Itaqui Beach, passing trails and dunes with stops for photos, swims and to enjoy the landscape. We stop for lunch and rest at the beachfront restaurant of Vila Itaqui Resort where lunch is served (not included). This tour includes freshwater and seawater bathing, plus cliffs and the lighthouse at Itaqui Beach.

By 4x4 (jardineira), we will explore one of the most preserved areas of Lençóis Maranhenses. The tour begins at 09:00, departing from the pousada toward the National Park. During the route, we will stop for swims in crystalline lagoons and, for those who wish, a short walk across the dunes. We continue to the village of Betânia, where we stop for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, we visit Rio Alegre, perfect for a relaxing swim in its warm waters and for beautiful photos. We finish the day with a stunning sunset from the highest point in the region — a breathtaking view.

Travosa is a native community located in the western part of the park; its people live from fishing and tourism. The tour lasts the entire day, departing at 09:00. On this excursion you can bathe in lagoons and deserted beaches, and experience sarnambi fishing and enjoy lunch (not included) with typical dishes made from sarnambi, shrimp and local fish. The afternoon return goes around Travosa, Guapiriba and Jangada lakes, where you can spot various bird species and enjoy a beautiful sunset view.

In the afternoon we visit Gaivota, Jurará and Sete Mulheres lagoons. We return to Atins after sunset. This full-day tour explores the lagoon circuit of Canto do Atins.

Departure from Atins around 15:00 in a 4x4 jardineira toward the Tropical Lagoon circuit; the drive to the lagoons is approximately 40 minutes, passing through the village of Santo Inácio and following the trail toward Barreirinhas until the dunes. We first reach Tropical Lagoon, where we will enjoy some time, and then visit Esmeralda Lagoon — beautiful lagoons that are also part of this circuit — returning to Atins after sunset.

The tour begins with a transfer from the pousada to the pier, where we cross the Preguiças River by ferry. From there we continue along trails of sand banks or scrub, where the vehicle can be very bumpy and jolting. Upon reaching the Great Lençóis Maranhenses the 4x4 jardineira stops and our adventure begins with the challenge of climbing a very steep dune about 80 m long or ascending a staircase of approximately 144 steps.

After this initial obstacle the physical effort required decreases considerably. At the top we have a panoramic view of Lençóis Maranhenses — simply breathtaking. You can walk among the lagoons and refresh yourself in their crystalline waters, and finally the first dune offers an incredible view of the sunset, a true spectacle of nature. Afterward we return to Barreirinhas.
